Topic

At St. George’s History and Geography lessons are taught through different topics each term. The children are taught skills within History and Geography lessons which are built upon each year. Within the History focus of our topic we develop the skills of historical concepts, historical enquiry and chronological knowledge, whilst within the Geography focus of our topic we develop the skills of understanding human and physical geography, locational knowledge and understanding the importance of fieldwork.

Intent

  • To encourage children to become historians developing an appreciation and understanding of the past, evaluating a range of primary and secondary sources.
  • To encourage children to become geographers, developing their curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
  • To show understanding of how the past influences the present and the ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment.
  • To link skills and vocabulary across subjects, terms and year groups so it is continually built on throughout their academic lives

Implementation

History and Geography lessons are taught by the class teacher. Each term planning is built around teaching the children to develop their skills and understanding, as well as developing progression and deepening the knowledge of their geographical or historical knowledge base.

Children are given lots of opportunities for learning outside the classroom which may include fieldwork in the local area or visits to historical and geographical places of significance to enhance the learning experience.

Impact

The impact of History and Geography is monitored throughout the year by SLT and the subject leader through looking at children’s work within a class and across the school to ensure there is progress and children are developing a range of skills. Discussions with pupils take place throughout the year to gauge their understanding of their learning, their engagement with the topics taught and assessing the skills they have acquired.

EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum at St George’s Cathedral Catholic Primary School has been planned to ensure that links are made to children’s future learning. Our curriculum focuses on different themes which link to children’s interests as well as important aspects related to the world that we live in.
