At St George’s Cathedral Catholic Primary School, we believe that assessment is not just about tests, it’s about understanding each child’s learning journey and helping them reach their full potential.
Every summer, pupils across the school take part in national assessments that measure their progress in key areas of the curriculum. These assessments help us celebrate achievements, identify areas for support, and ensure that our teaching continues to meet the needs of every learner.
Here’s how assessment works across different year groups:
Reception children are assessed across 17 areas of learning as part of the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile. This gives us a rounded picture of their development — from communication and language to physical development and early maths.
In Year 1, pupils complete the Phonics Screening Check, which assesses their ability to decode and read words using phonics — a vital skill for early reading success.
Year 2 pupils take part in Key Stage 1 assessments, which cover reading, writing, maths, and science. These help us understand how well children are progressing as they move through school.
In Year 6, pupils sit the Key Stage 2 SATs, which assess their attainment in reading, writing, maths, and science before they transition to secondary school. These results are an important part of understanding how well children are prepared for the next stage of their education.
We use these assessments alongside our own teacher-led evaluations throughout the year to build a complete picture of each child’s strengths and areas for growth.
